Chapter 20
“What the fuck is this?” said the male mutant that was supposed to kill Beau
Beau turned to the fire and lightning breather. “This us turning ourselves in. It’s what you and the government came in here to do. Take us in.”
“Your fucking around.” The Fire breather said. “Your just fucking with us to hide your power. I’ve seen the footage of you and Rider in action.”
Beau smiled. “You sound a bit fearful. What’s a matter son? You afraid your staring at your future.”
The fire breather took out his gun and shot Beau in the chest. The bullet knocked Beau back in his seat. Beau hissed. “Son of bitch that hurt.” He gasped out and spat blood on the floor. He smiled at the Fire breather. “You must be the mercenary of the group.”
“Beau! What the fuck happened? You son of a bitch.” E said moving out of her chair and fell to the floor. “Damn it. Damn it.” She pounded her fists on the floor. “What the fuck is happening? Tell me!”
“I’m fine. Calm down. Sit down and don’t get up again.”
“Mr. Lucas. Could you explain the situation with you and your friend’s mutations.” Major Benjamin asked.
Beau pulled himself up with one arm. “The fall out of the alien’s radiation damaged our bodies in different ways. I-I died the first day and was brought back barely in this form with no legs or ability to barely function without the powers. Even then I’m limited to the time I have to spend using the powers. I’m in consent pain from using the radiation to form legs and two weeks ago I lost fifty percent ability in my right arm.
My sister behind me lost her sight and some movement functions after the blast. She can use the radiation to see blurry images of individuals forms but she can’t see in 20/20 or anything near that vision. She’s blind. It’s common for the Supers hit hardest in the hell zone to have handicapped abilities.” Beau said and looked at the fire breather. “Where you in the city when the alien landed on us?”
The fire breath frowned. He said nothing. Beau nodded though.
“You have side effects to then. You either don’t know about them or your covering them up. It’s no use living that way. Reality is still reality.” Beau said.
“What side effects does Lightning Rider have then?” Major Benjamin asked. “He seems to have more stability then you and the-“
“He’s dying.” Beau said bluntly. “Rider will be dead in less then five years because of the radiation and heart failure. He’s on borrowed time. So he has to make the most of his time before he goes. All of the people the president had on the podium have side effects of some kind that will shorten our life spans. Major. Is there a cure or some type of hospital care we can get in jail or whatever place your taking us to.”
“Stop lying to them.” E said. “There is nothing wrong with eh.” E stopped talking because she went into a coughing fit that lasted several minutes until she stopped to catch her breath slowly. “Damn it.”
Beau stared at Major Benjamin. “Is there any way you can help us? We’re willing to go to prison or do whatever service you need us to do. But, we would like some medical assistance. We’ve been surviving and waiting months for the government to let us the hell out of here so we can get treatment of some kind.. We can’t go on like this. This like a slow fucking painful death for most us.” He said.
Major Benjamin shook his head. “I’m sorry son but I can’t guarantee anything right now. We’ll take you in and I’ll talk to my supervisors for you and your friend. Once they see how serious your situation is something will have to be done. One last question before we go. What about the tunnels?”
Beau shrugged shaking his head. “We searched them and made contact with people left down there. Anything above sub ground level is dangerous enough. You go below and it’s a different world with even more deadly mutations. They die like flies down there. They want to be left alone to suffer quietly. You won’t be able to open the subway system again right now if not a hundred years from now. Can you please take us away from this place?”
Major Benjamin straightened and nodded to his people who put their weapons down. “Are you ready to leave?”
Beau snorted in laughter. “Sir. I’ve been ready to leave this prison island five months ago. If they put me in a prison hole it will be better then being in a place I’ve seen my friends die in my arms from radiation poisoning. Let’s go.”
The First day
Beau woke as he was being wheeled down a white hall way. He looked around but E was gone. He was alone. He looked behind to see a muscled guard in grey uniform pushing down the hall way toward a black door with the letters BT on it.
Beau noticed a few things. 1) The pain his legs was down to low ache. He could hear whispers behind the other closed doors to his left and right. 2) There was a strange buzzing sound coming from the florescent lights above his head. It hurt his ears to hear and made the hair on his arms stand up at attention. The last and most important thing he noticed a part of him was missing. His powers were gone. But something was off about it. He still felt it. Something of that power an echo of some kind was in his mind.
He was quiet as he neared the door and it slide open to reveal a office room with computer workstation and a single sized bed on the floor to the near wall. It was small space.
The wheeled him inside and then placed a black folder in his lap. Beau picked up and opened it to see a set of projects he would be assigned to finish for the current month for a series of weapons and technical advancements to weapon systems.
Beau knew he could get them done by the end of the month. He just wondered if he could get away with imputing melfunctions into the medels without them noticing.
“You can’t!” The guard answered hearing his thoughts.
Beau didn’t look up. “Do you know anything about weapon designs or have a degree in engineering?”
“No. But I can read your mind from a mile away and know when your planning on bullshiting the normals. I would ordered to terminate you.”
Beau nodded. “Well then sense you can’t help me with my work you take your fat ass out of my cell so I can get to work. Like you said you don’t need to be in my way to read my mind so get the fuck on bitch.”
The guard was quiet but then turned and left the room. The door slid closed and Beau heard a loud audible heavy lock fall in place on the door.
